Is your home office literally looking like a tip?
Time to roll up those sleeves and get scrubbing then, not forgetting to throw away any unwanted and unnecessary clutter. Here are a few tips on how to organise your little corporate space in no time.
You need sectioning
Have a separate place for everything, or you’ll never find what you’re looking for in your own unorganised chaos. Ensure that you have a filing system in place for all paperwork, and archive anything dated. If you have mounds of paperwork, it may help to file them away in alphabetical order, or in a way that is easy for you to sift through.
A process for a process
Create a process for everything you do on a daily basis. Not having any structure in your working day means you end up working on an ad-hoc basis, and you won’t be able to construct your day this way long-term.
Keep a schedule of outstanding tasks to do and consult this every day. Keep the top section for today, a mid-section for tasks that are a priority, and a bottom section for non-important things that still need doing. In fact, plan your whole week ahead and keep adding things as you go along.
Failing that, you could get a white board or bulletin board, on which to write your targets and things to do the next day. At least you can easily wipe away any tasks you've completed, as well as add more.
Time to manage
Managing time effectively prevents you from leaving random bits of paper lying around, which you can then lose track of. Keep everything in its place without having to rush, and allow yourself enough time for each task that needs doing.
Less (clutter) is more (productive)
Having less clutter strewn around everywhere stops you having to search high and low for that document you thought was in front of you. Organising your space and minimising clutter leaves more room for productivity.
The colour of your space also has an influence on productivity levels. For example, if your office is painted in red, you will find you are restless and angry most of the time, whereas calming or bright colours like mint green or yellow can influence a good mood to boot!
To ensure you have enough space in your office and that you’re not cramped, invest in a corner office desk and sufficient storage solutions to keep everything neat and tidy. Being surrounded will make you feel claustrophobic in what is meant to be your thinking ground. Clear office, clear mind.
